Peacock

The zoo has two pairs of peacocks - the colourful one and the white one. I couldn't get a clear pic of the peacocks as it was getting dark by the time we werre here.

Noodle Tree

This tree is in the zoo near the bird cages.

I loved how the sunlight trickled through the branches. The branches were mingled like that right till the end. Never seen a tree like that. Have you?

Happy Republic Day

Krrish had to dress as one of India's national leader or freedom fighter for the Republic Day celebrations in school.
He wore the uniform of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose's Indian National Army. Subhash Chandra Bose was one of the most prominent and highly respected leaders of the Indian Independence Movement against the British Raj.

Happy Republic Day

Colourful birds

These birds seem to be close together all the time, even in the cage. Neatly perched on the tree branch, they were a lovely sight for any photographer.

White Crow

I never knew there were white crows till I saw this one. Are white crows common in your city?

Parrot

This parrot was in a cage beside the crow's cage. I couldnt get more of it coz it sat on the wooden support all tthe time, and it's lower half was not seen.

I wonder if it's a wild one, coz we saw many big wild parrots, screeching loudly in larger cages.

Leopard

This is the best I could get of the leopard in its cage. I don't know of other zoos around the country or around the world, but the space did seem limited for the fastest running animal in the world.

Elephants

The first animals we saw were the elephants, though from quite a distance. Our toddlers were already shouting 'elephant' in their not so clear toddler language. There were just these two elephants, but they didnt seem like tied up with chains or so, and could move around freely even till this grassy patch, close to where we were standing.
I remember going on elephant rides in the zoo, when we were kids. But I didnt see anything like that now.

Jijamata Udyan

This is the clock tower at the Jijamata Udyan also known as Victoria Gardens and Rani Baug( Mumbai's zoo ) in Byculla.
The zoo will soon be closed for renovation so I and my sister took the kids for their first ever visit to the zoo, last week. The zoo timings are from 9 am to 6 pm and is closed on Wednesdays.
This clock tower has been there ever since the zoo was opened here. When we were kids, we lived right opposite the road at Byculla and it was a daily routine to check the time in the tower while going to school every morning.
We managed to get pictures of some animals and birds in the zoo, though there aren't many left.

Cane Sofa Set

This one is not my type but a very popular one in Mumbai homes.
What do you think of cane furniture in your living room?

Cane Furniture

Cane furniture can be found for sale along the roadside in many parts of the city. I saw a nice collection of cane bucket chairs, sofa sets and dining tables at about half a kilometre distance fom the plant nursery and found it irresistible.
This set can be bought from a showroom for Rs. 15,000 (about 370 US$) but here, you caan get it for Rs. 10,000 ( 250 US$).
The furniture is polished after the order is received and delivered to your residence.

Matka

The 'matka' is an earthen pot, a vessel traditionally used to store water.
It is popular even today, especially in summers for its quality of cooling, to store drinking water. Small sized matkas are very popular for rabdi( dessert), yoghurt and malai kulfi.
These pots are available at the plant nurseries.

Genda Flower

No Hindu ritual is complete without a Genda garland or atleast a token flower. Also incense, fruit, raksha, coconut, haldi, sindur and prasad are part of the Hindu pooja kit.

Yellow Hibiscus

The yellow hibiscus is also known as the Hawaiian hibiscus.

Tulsi

Tulsi or Holy Basil is seen in most Hindu homes. It is an aromatic herb. The leaves of the plant are used for worship and have many medicinal and curative properties. The Tulsi plant is worrshipped by Hindus and is grown in front of the entrance of the house, in a specially built structure like the ones in the pic, which has images of deities on all four sides.

Plant Nursery

This plant nursery is located on the road from Vashi to Koparkhairane. They have not only beautiful flowering plants, ferns and other plants for sale but also readymade grass lawns and beautiful flower pots. The petunias in yesterday's photo were also taken here.

The person who was in charge of the nursery was friendly and allowed me to take some lovely photos.
